Age of Moon: Waxing Crescent : ~ 0.32 days old. = 7.68 hrs old

Set Time difference : approx 13 minutes

The New Moon crescent’s first light will be in conjunction with the Sun on April 1st @ 10:33 UTC+4, and based on the astronomical calculations, the Crescent (Hilal) would not be possible to observe with naked eyes or with only optical aid on this day, because of the Set Time difference and age of the Crescent which is very young.

Based on the Astronomical data report, the Sunsets at 6:22 Pm UTC+4@ (270°W), and 6:35 pm @ (270° W) for the Moon which makes out around 13minuets for the sighting before it sets below the true Horizon.

From this report, it is not possible to sight the crescent “Hilal” even with the help of optical Aid (Telescope). Yet might be possible yet challenging through a CCD camera. The chances increase as we move towards the southwest of the globe and or sighting at a higher altitude. However, it all depends on weather conditions at that place and time. Yet because of the Moon age and set time, it will not be possible to sight by naked eyes including with Optical aid. Shaaban will most probably continue its 30 days. InShaAllah (If God wills), this is what I highly presume will happen according to the past reports and practical sightings.

These technical reports are made only for sighting assistance, No final conclusions are made until the Moon Crescent sighting has been taken place. Please follow the government official announcement

Crescent Visibility Report for Shawwal 1433

Crescent Visibility Report for Shawwal 1433 (Thursday 18th August 2012) Based on settings*

Ramadan Kareem , first of all the Crescent visibility for Shawwal on 17th August (Friday Evening) won’t happen due to the following reasons;

  1. The Moon Crescent is still in Waning Gibbous and still did not enter into the new moon phase (Waxing Gibbous). The Conjunction Occurs After Sunset.
  2. The Moon sets approximately ~22 minutes before the Sun.
  3. It is 28th of Ramadan (Oman), Therefore Ramadan cannot be 28 days. Instead Ramadan must be 29 or (30 Max) Days.

For the main three reasons above, the Official Sighting Day is on 18th of August 2012.  In case of Saudi Arabia, It’s 29th of Ramadan and the sighting on this day (17th August) is not possible due to the same reasons above.

Saudi Arabia will fast 30 days of Ramadan, Therefore Saudi  Arabia has no Official Sighting Day. Saudi Arabia and its followers has no option but to simply declare that on Sunday 19th 2012 is the first day of Eid Al Fitr, whether they witness the crescent Hilal or not.

The report for Official sighting day in Oman (18 August 2012).

Set Time difference : ~19 minutes

Based on the astronomical calculations, the Crescent (Hilal) will be visible across the country. In Oman and the Arab Gulf countries, the Hilal will only be visible thru optical aid such as Binoculars and Telescope. If we go towards South of Africa and Brazil, the chances of visibility increases as it could be possible to sight Hilal by Naked eye. As shown in the graph photo above. (Graph produced by Accurate Times software)

However the chances for Crescent visibility either by using optical aid or naked eye depends on many other factors. Please Click here to refer to old post for the factors.

Screen shot 2012-08-18 at 18.00.00

The screen shot above from Starry Night Pro software which shows the new moon on. 18th/8/2012, 29/Ramadan/1433 (Arabic date). In the picture you can see that the Moon is around ~11°  away from the Sun @18:00, and the moon is only 0.95 days old which is a bit challenge to observe by naked eye even when viewed through optical aid.

We’ve got a big chance to observe the Hilal on higher Altitude here in Oman. With the help of technology and the equipment’s that we have, I say that 90% chances that Shawwal will be on 19th Of August.

This time will be fun and challenge, it all depands on the factors which I’ve mentioned earlier in my old post. Hopefully we will be able to sight it on that day. In-Sha-Allah (If God Wills)

If not, Ramadan will continue its 30 days.

Please Note: It is very bad to make a final conclusion stating that the month will start on such day (without reasonable evidence)  . We will be committing shirk if we do that. Instead we shall say the starting of such month will be so- on the following date after sighting the Moon Waxing Crescent (Hilal). InShaAllah

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path. May Allah bless us all during Ramadan, and throughout the year, with His forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other. Ameen.

However I got report from another town, Nafada about 350km away where the sky was superbly clear and hundreds of people there have tried sighting it but could not see it. All other friends that I constantly ask to try sighting the crescent during other lunar months also admitted not seeing it. Surprisingly though we heard from some media outlets that some people in couple of locations have sighted it.  The problem though is that once Saudi Arabia announced beginning of Ramadan it becomes a very strong justufication for claims of sighting and thus very difficult to refute.
Alhamdu Lillah.

Oman

1. Not Seen: ICOP member Eng. Martin Elsaesser from Jebel Shams City in Ad Dakhiliyah State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: “We went to Jebel Shams, a 3000m high mountain to try to observe the crescent on 19. July. We started around 0930 and tried for 6 hours to image the crescent in daytime, but could not detect it. The sky was ok (which probably translates to excellent by local standards), but the area around the sun was still white with scattered light. This was not good enough to detect a crescent at 5° elongation.

Later, clouds moved in and covered the sky, with some light rain. Shortly before sunset, the sun reached the lower edge of the clouds and nicely vanished in the haze some time later, still above the geometrical horizon. As the crescent was at least 100 million times fainter (going from the astronomical brightnes of sun and crescent) i just watched the colorful show.

I tried to take some “measurements” of the sky brightness during the day, using a quick lashup of a solar-photometer-lens for my DSLR. I will try to analyze these images later, hoping to get some kind of numerical value for the sky quality we encountered.

Oman

Saudi Arabia

1. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Saleh Al-Saab from Bokariyyah City in al Gaseem State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging

Mr. Samy Khadem-Al-Charieh said: “The crescent was seen by our colleague in daytime by CCD only and it was very hard (6° elongation only). Because of the strong haze and the short moonlag time there was no success after sunset.”

South Africa

1. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim from Cape Town City in Western Cape Province State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim said: “As a point of interest, I set up a Dobsonian XT6 telescope to try to capture the crescent but to no avail. The solar coronal glare was larger than usual, especially upwards of the trailing limb of the sun. The moon was positioned in this area. There was a mass coronal emission yesterday and perhaps (?) this may be the cause of the excessive coronal glare.

The weather was fine and trying to break the world record for a telescopic sighting proved unsuccessful.”

United Kingdom

1. Not Seen: ICOP member Eng. Qamar Uddin from York City in North Yorkshire State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Qamar Uddin said: “On Thursday, 19 July 2012 (29 Shaban 1433 AH) many people from throughout UK have attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Ramadan after sunset. None of the groups were able to sight the Hilal, even though some places had clear sky conditions.

We have not received any reliable sighting reports (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari) from east of the UK/Morocco either. The Morocco Awqaf Ministry and Jamiat-e-Ulama South Africa have both reported negative sightings.

Therefore, the Wifaq/Batley Ulama have decided that the month of Shaban 1433 AH will complete 30 days and the month of Ramadan 1433 AH will start from Saturday 21 July 2012 (i.e. sunset of 20 July 2012), Insha-Allah.

Note that none of the 9 official Saudi Hilal Committees were able to sight the Ramadan Hilal this evening, even by telescopes, but the usual persons from near Riyadh (Sudair and Shaqra) have claimed sightings and their report has been accepted by the court. May Allah forgive our mistakes and guide us to the right path (Ameen).”

2. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Muhammad Arshad Dar from Bolton City in Lancashire State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging

1. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Martin Elsaesser from Muscat City in Muscat State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: “We started well before sunset, using a mobile telescope optimized for crescent observations. Sky conditions were very hazy, but free of visible clouds. We could quickly see the crescent with the CCD camera and the telescopes tracked it well. This crescent was not a difficult task for the CCD system.
Switching to the visual view, we could later also see it visually through the telescope after sunset. 5 observers where present and i think we all saw it visually, but it was not easy and finding precise focus for each observer was important. We could NOT see it with the naked eye.
I took some images with a standard DSLR through the telescope, to get images similar to the visual view. I have added a raw image from the DSLR, a contrast-stretched image from the DSLR and an image from my dedicated crescent imaging system, all taken with the same telescope.”

1. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Abu Ammar Mangorangca from Marawi City in Mindanao State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abu Ammar Mangorangca said: “This is a belated report and is being submitted for record purpose.

The 29th of Sha’ban in our extant calendar falls on Friday, July 20. Hence, sighting of hilal was attempted on the evening that day although there was no great expectation of positive result because the whole country was on the front end of a low pressure storm, locally named Ferdie by our meteorology agency. Heavy rains fall on many parts of the country, resulting into floods even in metropolitan areas like Manila.

But to chance for the occasional and brief clearing of clouds, the attempt to observe the hilal was made by several parties. This was done mostly by members of the Tabligh movement whose members are located in most towns and villages in the country. No other group of Muslims in the Philippines has the organization and resource to seriously observe the hilal on a nation-wide and regular basis.

Since the hilal was not sighted on Friday evening, Ramadhan starts on Sunday, 22 July. Of course there are groups around who belong to the Saudi club and who started the Holy Month on Friday.  ”
