BBC Documentary Space Video

HYPERSPACE

WITH SAM NEILL

BBC Documentary Space Episode 1 Star Stuff
Star Stuff How the Universe was made, from the Big Bang to the human body.
BBC Documentary Space Episode 2 Staying Alive
The Universe is a dangerous place. This programme investigates our survival in space. Although you can’t see asteroids with the naked eye, a good pair of binoculars or a small telescope will help you to spot them.
BBC Documentary Space Episode 3 Black Holes

Black holes are the Universe’s ultimate monsters, sucking everything into their super-dense centres.

Black holes were once thought to be the monsters of the Universe, devouring everything around them in a frenzied cosmic feast. But now astronomers think that rather than being a space menace, black holes may be fundamental to the creation of galaxies.

Black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape, making them impossible to see. But we can see the stuff that is being sucked in to these massive cosmic vacuum cleaners. Anything that approaches a black hole is first torn apart by its immense gravitational force and then forms a flat rotating disc that spirals into the hole.

BBC Documentary Space Episode 4 Are We Alone?

There are over four hundred thousand million stars in our Galaxy alone. Where do we start looking for life?

With hundreds of telescopes now involved in the SETI programme, there is lots of data to look through. Spotting strong signals is easy, but finding a weak signal takes lots of computer time.

BBC Documentary Space Episode 5 New Worlds

Terraforming and humanity’s colonisation of other planets.

How could humans migrate from planet Earth?

Explore the Solar System – Mars – the likely candidate – Human exploration, past and future

Space (Hyperspace in the United States) was a 2001 BBC documentary with various subtitles reflecting the specific topic. Narrated by Sam Neill, this is a six-part series.

BBC Documentary Space Episode 6 Boldly Go

If humans are ever to reach deep space, there will need to be some revolutionary changes in transport.

Dreamt up at the beginning of last century, solar sails are now moving a step closer to reality, as one of the most feasible ways of travelling into deep space. They are lightweight panels made from reflective material that act like the sails of a boat. Rather than using wind, the sails are actually propelled by light. Unbelievable as it may seem, the stream of light particles (called photons) emitted from the Sun are strong enough to push a mini-spacecraft right out of the Solar System and beyond into interstellar space.

Harry Potter and the Telescopes of Doom

Harry Potter and the Telescopes of Doom

"You’ll have guessed from the title that this post is about Harry Potter but it is also about astronomy so bear with me. Unless you’ve been living in a mine for the past month, you will be well aware that the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series is due out on 21st July 2007. The online book sellers have gone crazy taking pre-orders even before the release date was announced.

So what has this to do with astronomy? Well, following some inflatable planetarium shows a couple of years ago, we started to realise that Harry Potter contains quite a few references to stars and constellations. For instance Andromeda Tonks, Regulus Black, Draco Malfoy and Bellatrix LeStrange. Perhaps the most obvious is Sirius Black who appropriately, given that Sirius is the dog star and part of Canis Major – the Big Dog – can turn into a large dog. That was about as much excuse as we needed at Jodrell Bank Observatory to organise a Harry Potter book six star party back in 2005. That was lots of fun so we are doing the same for the launch of book seven.

In 2005 we had a magical evening that started at 9pm with all arrivals being sorted into the four houses of Aquila, Delphinus, Lepus and Cygnus. Of course they aren’t the same as those at Hogwarts but then Jodrell Bank Observatory isn’t Hogwarts. Once sorted, house prefects (Jodrell Bank PhD and MSc students) took the new students to an outside star talk, a planetarium show, a 3D trip to Mars, wand and hat making, and let them look through real telescopes at the night sky. Oh and of course people were able to pick up their new books at 1 minute past midnight too. It was something a bit different to the standard star party with wizards and witches of all ages wandering around learning a bit of astronomy at the same time. We even filled the 42ft radio telescope with green smoke, making it look a bit like a cauldron.

Hopefully this year will be even better. I’m looking forward to it already." Quoted from Astronomy Blog
Note that the star party will be on the night of Friday 20th July 2007.

Looks like the the name of the book will be as this article title name or it will be named as Harry Potter and the smoking Telescope of Doom…amm still working on the naming part.

Talking about Apple’s iPhone

Talking about Apple’s iPhone

pr0xy k1ll3r from liveandbeyond.com has a few good points on the iPhone…

"Despite the fancy UI and all the buzz created around Apple’s iPhone here is the low down on why it sucks…

1.       It will be a closed platform running software approved by Apple only. That means Apple will get a huge cut from selling the software through its iTunes store. It may even charge a dollar per ring tone.

2.       It does not have 3G, but will have EGDE (2.5 G). EDGE is so 2006. 3G is faster but eats up the battery life, and apple may not have a good battery in place to support 3G.

3.       You cannot have an extra battery for iPhone. It is sealed. wtf? You can’t carry an extra battery?! Or do you have to send it back to Apple to change it so that they can charge you more money for it. What about when the phone hangs up, as most smart phones do? The best solution is to remove the battery and restart again as none of the buttons or touch screen buttons work. Let me see how they get around this problem…

4.       The Price: $499 (4GB) or $599(8GB) with a two year contract, by the time the contract is over your iPhone will probably be scratched all over like the Nano or be made obsolete by better phone on the market. Think at the pace at which the gadget market is going. 4Gb in 2008 – 2009 ? CRAP!!!

5.       Other reasons are poor battery life, no expansion slot, what is the RAM, Processor speed and other technical details?

uhm.. Let me see how Steve Jobs thinks he can capture 1% of the mobile phone market with this high priced phone that only high-end users can afford. Who knows, maybe he can but only by riding on the current popularity of the iPod…"
